چکیده

The subject of this investigation is the development of an accurate simulation of a truck impacting a strong-post w-beam guardrail. Detailed methods for system simulation are proposed and three major issues which involve the use of springs to simulate component crashworthiness behavior is investigated. Rail to blockout bolt connection, soil-post dynamic interaction, and effect of ends of guardrail are modeled and simulated. Soilpost interaction is modeled using both Lagrangian and Eulerian meshes and results using the two methods are presented. The present paper provides a roadmap for simulation of highway safety structures.

Modeling and Prediction of FRP Composite Cylinder tubes Crashworthiness Characteristics

In this paper, numerical simulation of FRP composite cylinder tubes progressive crushing processes is conducted using LS-Dyna. Details on the numerical modeling strategy are given and discussed. It is found that triggers introduced in the numerical simulation can effectively model the bevel trigger at the end of the tubular specimens. It is also found that two-layer finite element model based o...

Programming Crashworthiness Simulation for Parallel Platforms

This paper addresses parallel programming paradigms for nonlinear, explicit finite element simulations primarily employed for crashworthiness and occupant safety simulations in the automotive industry. The reliance of industrial design on computer simulation and state-of-the-art high performance computing architectures will be discussed as a motivation for the need for parallel implementations ...

Finite element model and validation of a surrogate crash test vehicle for impacts with roadside objects

Highway and roadside safety features are crash tested for compliance with certain safety criteria. US Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) uses a surrogate reusable test vehicle, Bogie, to conduct crash tests of roadside safety features. Bogie is intended to replace an impacting vehicle in order to reduce the cost of the test. Bogie can be configured with different crushable impact noses repre...

Multi-objective Crashworthiness Optimization of the Aluminum Foam-filled Tubes

In order to reduce both the weight of vehicles and the damage of occupants in a crash event simultaneously, it is necessary to perform a multi-objective optimization of the automotive energy absorbing components. In this paper, axial impact crushing behavior of the aluminum foam-filled thin-walled tubes are studied by the finite element method using commercial software ABAQUS. Comparison of the...

Incremental layerwise finite element formulation for viscoelastic response of multilayered pavements

This paper provides an incremental layerwise finite element formulation for the viscoelastic analysis of multilayered pavements.  The constitutive behavior of asphalt concrete is represented by the Prony series. Layerwise finite element has been shown to provide an efficient and accurate tool for the numerical simulation of laminated structures. Most of the previous research on numerical simula...
